This new version brings many user-requested features to streamline event management.

Importing/Exporting Events

It is possible to import events from the application (Home > Create an Event > Import an SCE File), and exporting data in SCE format has been promoted to avoid the data loss encountered with other formats.

Importing Players in CSV Format

It is possible to import players in bulk using a CSV file.

Player Distribution in Tournaments

Before the start of an event’s tournaments, it is possible to distribute players into tournaments based on their rating, either manually or automatically (Tournaments tab > Distribute Players).

This feature will be particularly appreciated by organizers of events with by-level tournaments, allowing for very quick tournament setup as soon as check-in is complete.

Removing Unpaired Players

Previously, removing unpaired players (for example, before upload them online) was done individually on the Players tab.

This can now be done all at once (Tournaments tab > Actions > Remove Unpaired Players).

Improvement to the Crosstable Document

Hovering over player now displays their history.

Pairing Engine Version Update

The bbpPairings engine has been updated to version 6, bringing Sharly Chess into compliance with recent changes to the FIDE Handbook.

For this new version, the Sharly Chess developers focused on improving the plugins needed for organizing and arbitrating school competitions in France.

Note: the “Print” menu has been renamed “Documents,” as documents are rarely printed (one of Sharly Chess’s goals is to minimize printing).

Rework of the Players tab

All the columns are now sortable

Search by name and club is globalized

Dynamic columns handling to match the usage

Downloading now takes effect on the search results

Improvements to the French School Competitions Plugin

Several features have been added, and the user experience has been significantly improved.

The schools’ data can be modified after creation.

Schools can be deleted when not in use.

The number of players per school has been added to the statistics document.

An option allows to show only the complete teams on the schools ranking document.

A general ranking of schools has been added to the schools ranking document.

It is possible to hide the UAIs of schools for export to the FFE website.

The interface for adding and updating players has been significantly improved (the institution is now saved between entries).

FFE Plugin Improvements

Player updates are now done by FFE license number, by FIDE ID (new), and then by name and date of birth, making it easier to add the license numbers of unlicensed players at the time of competition (very useful for school competitions).

Pre-filled license certificates are now available in the “Documents” menu, along with most FFE forms.

New Hybrid Prize Type

A new prize type called hybrid allows you to specify both monetary and non-monetary prizes (trophies, cups, medals, prizes in kind, etc.).

Deletion of Archived Events

Archived events can now be deleted from the web interface, without accessing the file system.

Displaying Pairings in Alphabetical Order

Options on the screens now allow you to display a maximum number of players with minimal information (board number and color), particularly suited to youth competitions where players are often confused by detailed displays (and not just young players!).

Player age category improvements

To meet the needs of organisers of events that don’t use the standard FIDE age categories, it’s now possible to configure the age categories that will be used by your event. Different configurations can be used on an ad-hoc basis, but you can also create category sets that you can re-use easily for future events too.

Age categories can now be calculated using a configurable reference date.
By doing so, players remain in the age category they had on that date instead of being reclassified based on the tournament date.
This is particularly useful for long-running championships, where a player might otherwise change category partway through the competition.

Event Export

To facilitate event sharing, it is now possible to export events, specifying whether or not to include players, their personal data (email and phone number), and the credentials used to publish results online.

Prize Receipts

To meet the needs expressed by some organizers, prize receipts allow for recording the collection of prizes from players.

Removal of Browser Translations

Browser abusive translations have been reported (even including player names!), so browsers are now asked to stop translating interface content.

Timers

The timer management interface has been simplified, and timers now appear on the rotators.

Linux

Linux bundles are now available for Intel/AMD and ARM architectures.

Beta testers have reported successful installations on Ubuntu and Mint (details, but we are still far from a stable and fully supported distribution for all Linux platforms.
The Sharly Chess developers are unable to provide support for this aspect and are looking for Linux experts. Get in touch!

Chess-Results.com

A “State” field has been added to the Chess-Results export for some federations.

This update focuses on several main areas:

Streamlined UI

We’ve made a number of improvements to make the interface cleaner and more consistent:

Default settings for tournaments, prizes, and screens have been moved out of the Event settings and into their respective pages.
This makes them easier to find when needed and reduces the complexity of the Event configuration.

All dialogs have been reviewed and made more compact, so more information fits on screen.
This minimizes the need for scrolling and improves readability.

Place Cards

You can now print place cards directly from Sharly Chess. Three types are available:

Board Place Cards — one per board in the tournament

Player Place Cards — one per player

Round Place Cards — one per round for each board

Basic templates are included, and you can also design your own (details)!

French Schools Plugin

A new plugin is available to help manage French school competitions.
It adds an easy way to record each player’s school, and automatically exports this as the club name when generating Papi files.

Arbiter and organiser declaration

The Staff tab has been enhanced so that roles can be assigned to staff members. In particular, you can now designate the chief arbiter and deputy arbiters for specific tournaments. This information is included in your exports (TRF, Chess-Results.com, etc.).

It’s also now possible to add organiser information to Events. The information is included when exporting to Chess-Results.com.

The remaining limitations that had previously restricted Sharly Chess to use in France have now been removed:

The plug-in providing features specific to the French Chess Federation is now active only for tournaments hosted in France (i.e., where the federation is set to “FRA”).

FIDE and national ratings are now handled separately (tournament settings specify which rating type to use).

All standard FIDE tie-breaks are now available.

The Baku acceleration system has been implemented.

The value of the Pairing Allocated Bye can now be adjusted.

:information_source: FIDE and national ratings: for tournaments hosted in France, the FFE plug-in ensures that
you continue to get the familiar behaviour regarding player ratings.
If a player has a FIDE rating, it will always take precedence over their national rating.

:information_source: Tie-breaks not supported by Papi: Tie-breaks not supported by Papi can not be displayed
on the website of the French Federation but the rankings displayed on the federal website are strictly consistent
with those of Sharly Chess.

And we didn’t stop there — several great new features have also been added:

Uploading to Chess-Results.com (many thanks to Heinz Herzog for making this possible).

The ability to print player norm certificates, complete with automatic verification of all norm criteria.

A simplified management UI for the application and the events.

With the release of version 3.2, we’re ready to begin the FIDE endorsement process!

The competition was managed using a beta version of Sharly Chess 3.1, tested in a full-scale real-world setting.

9 rounds at a time control of 12 minutes plus 3 seconds per move were played using an accelerated Swiss system for the Brittany Championship,
and a round-robin format for the “Little Pawns“ tournament welcoming young beginners.

Thanks to the simplified alphabetical display of pairings and players entering their own results, the day’s schedule was kept perfectly on track:
first round at 9:45am and prize-giving wrapped up by 5pm!

Sharly Chess was pushed to the limit, with almost every available feature being used — especially the new features introduced in versions 3.0 and 3.1.

The delegation was organized as follows:

result entry delegated to players on three dedicated devices with the access level “Result entry on public screens“,

check-in and result modifications to two arbiters with the access level “Section arbitration“,

all other operations (pairings, printing, etc.) were done in administrator mode on the Sharly Chess server.

The “Little Pawns“, who were for many experiencing their very first competition, also entered their own results independently, without any difficulty.

Many prizes were awarded to participants, some of which could be combined:

General ranking of the 17th Domloup Rapid Open:

trophy for the winner

€900 in prizes for the top 6 finishers

Hort system sharing

for all participants

Category rankings of the Brittany Rapid Championship:

€100 for the overall champion

prizes by placement

reserved for licensed Breton players only (16 mixed/female categories)

Rankings for qualification to the Roza Lallemand Trophy:

qualification for the top two women

reserved for licensed Breton women only

General ranking of the “Little Pawns“ tournament:

cup for the winner

medals for the next two

Prize calculation is always a sensitive moment in tournament management: it must be error-free and quick so the awards can be handed out as early as possible.
Thanks to Sharly Chess’s comprehensive prize management interface, four sets of prizes, partly combinable, were created, and prize allocation was calculated by Sharly Chess as soon as the final round ended, then passed to the treasurer to prepare the checks for the winners.

The network configuration used was as follows:

the server, used by the chief arbiter for screen configuration and pairings, connected:

to the internet for real-time result publication;

to a small Wi-Fi router making it visible to other network clients;

two laptops (used by assistant arbiters) for check-in;

three projectors connected to three laptops, each running a display controller to:

show pairings alphabetically before rounds;

show pairings by board during rounds;

three devices for entering results (two for the Brittany Championship and one for the “Little Pawns“);

one standalone Android projector (XGimi MoGo 2) for showing “Little Pawns“ pairings.

With the exception of the Sharly Chess server on Windows 11, all other computers used were very old machines (10–20 years) running a minimal operating system (Linux Mint) and a web browser connected to the server.

On Sunday, September 28, the 2026 Brittany Rapid Championship took place in Domloup, bringing together 193 players.

A First FIDE Arbiter Norm on Sharly Chess!

On Sunday, September 28, an open rapid tournament took place in Perpignan, as part of the 2026 Roussillon Circuit, bringing together 84 players.

The tournament, fully managed with Sharly Chess, led to the awarding of a FIDE Arbiter norm to Stéphane LABORDE — a first!

A big thank you to Stéphane (one of the very first users of Papi-web) for trusting Sharly Chess, and to chief arbiter Patrice CAPITANIO, whom we’re confident will soon join the Sharly Chess community.

The setup was as follows:

the Sharly Chess server, connected to the internet,

with a mobile phone providing the internet connection,

a simple Wi-Fi repeater/mini-router (no larger than a USB charger) connected to it,

and then 3 tablets for result entry + 2 PCs connected to the router.

The Wi-Fi relay router allowed:

avoiding overloading the smartphone (its simultaneous connections are limited),

and offloading its power usage as well, since it only had to handle one Wi-Fi connection (the router).

Everything ran extremely fast and smoothly.

For the very first time, a FIDE Arbiter norm has been awarded at a tournament fully managed with Sharly Chess.
